Creating a Secure Access Foundation for Modern Campus Work

About the Client

Vancouver Community College (VCC) is a public post-secondary institution in British Columbia that provides academic, cultural, and hands-on learning opportunities for students across a wide range of programmes. VCC has historically served more than 15,000 students annually and employs approximately 1,200 staff across two campuses.

As hybrid work and learning continue to evolve, VCC sought a modern approach to secure access that could better support users wherever they work while strengthening security and reducing reliance on traditional VPN technology.

Secure access needed to work everywhere without adding complexity.

VCC wanted to modernize its remote access environment and provide a more consistent experience for users connecting from campus, home, or public networks. The college was looking to reduce reliance on traditional VPN technology while maintaining secure access to applications and services.

The challenge was to introduce a modern, identity-based access model at scale while minimizing disruption to day-to-day operations and the user experience.

VCC wanted to move away from a traditional VPN-based remote access model and adopt a more modern, identity-aware approach to secure access. The goal was not to fix a single security failure, but to strengthen and modernize how users accessed applications and resources from different locations…to stay protected regardless of where they connected, while giving IT greater confidence that managed devices were accessing resources through a secure connection.

The Solution

VCC adopted Microsoft Global Secure Access to support a more modern and secure approach to connectivity.

Working closely with the college’s IT team, MSP Corp planned and delivered a phased rollout that included configuration, user communications, deployment, and post-implementation monitoring. The solution leveraged Microsoft Entra Internet Access, Microsoft Entra Private Access, Intune, Conditional Access, and security policies to provide secure, identity-aware access to applications and resources.

  • Secure Access from Anywhere

    Users can now connect securely whether they are working on campus, remotely, or while travelling. The solution provides a consistent experience regardless of location while helping protect access from untrusted networks

  • Reduced Reliance on Traditional VPN

    Approximately 1,700 users were transitioned to the new secure access model, significantly reducing dependency on VPN access across the organization. Only a small number of specialized administrative users continue to use VPN for select use cases.

  • Seamless User Experience

    The transition was largely transparent for end users. Staff gained secure access without major changes to how they work, helping support adoption while minimizing disruption.

  • A Stronger Foundation for the Future

    The transition was seamless for our users. Whether staff are on campus, working remotely, or travelling, they now have a consistent and secure access experience wherever they connect.
